Happy Syttende Mai, everyone! Syttende Mai is celebrated as the Norwegian Constitution Day and simply means May seventeenth.

My hometown (and the rest of Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota) has a rich Norwegian herritage. My own great-great-great-grandfather, Peder, came to America in 1881 from Namsskogan, Norway. Because of this heritage, my hometown celebrates the holiday every year with a huge town celebration and parade. The children’s parade, during the regular town Saturday afternoon parade, is the traditional Norwegian celebration that the kindergarten classes participate in each year.

The community joins together in colorful array to celebrate its folklore and legends of the mighty Viking warrior Leif Ericson.

So…..that’s me in May 1996 in the Syttende Mai parade. Weren’t we just adorable!
